‘At this precise moment I’d contemplate impaling Snow White on a sharp stick for a bottle of vodka, Dr Fielding, and happily watch her squirm to death as I get merrily tanked. Does that tell you how much I’d like a drink right now?’
Portia was in one of her moods. A mood that takes no prisoners as her raised voice testified. Since checking herself in to The Abbey the day before she had been alcohol-free and the burning need for a drink was beginning to weigh heavier than a juggernaut. And even though he was considered to be one of the best in his field, the structured and pseudo-understanding questioning of Bruno Fielding was definitely rubbing her up the wrong way.
‘I suggest you don’t speak louder than is necessary, Ms Safari. Your voice is damaged enough as it is and will need time to rectify itself. I understand from speaking to your consultant in Harley Street that the damage is not too extensive, but becoming upset about a lack of alcohol when that has more than likely contributed to the problem is not exactly wise, you understand.’
Dr Fielding’s tone reminded Portia of her days at the Royal College of Music when a tutor would reprimand you for hitting a bum note. Portia had never been a lover of an authoritative intonation unless, of course, it was her own.
Her irritation mounting, Portia was quick to bite back. ‘What I understand, Dr Fielding, is that if most people asked themselves why they drank, they probably wouldn’t have an answer, but I am not most people. I know why I drink. It makes me forget how lonely my life has become. If I have a drink it helps me convince myself that I’m having the time of my life. The odd tipple takes me out of my own head and makes me forget. I search for my necessary dose of love out of a bottle because it’s much more reliable than having to depend on men. You should know what spineless, parsimonious pricks they can be – you are one, after all!’
‘A prick, a man or both of the above?’ Dr Fielding couldn’t resist volleying Portia’s comment right back at her. ‘But from what Duncan has told me about you, and what I’ve read in the newspapers, I understand that you may have a new suitor who you think could be more than capable of making you happy – Piero Romeo.’
Just the mention of his name brought a smile to her face. Piero had been phoning Portia constantly since her admission into The Abbey. As far as he was concerned, Portia was in there for a little body work, something which he deemed completely unnecessary. They had talked for hours. Well, Piero had talked. He had insisted that Portia merely whisper to relax her voice. At the end of his last conversation with her he had promised that he would visit her as soon as he could. Portia prayed that it wouldn’t be too long, as she was aching for his touch.
